Having fine hair can be both a blessing and a curse. You often find your locks are naturally soft and silky post-wash, but the downfalls include lack of volume, easy tangles and your hair getting greasy very quickly.

Feeling frustrated? You’re not alone. Continue reading to find out everything you need to know about caring for fine hair, from how often you should be washing it to how to best style it without causing any damage or breakage.

What is the structure or texture of fine hair?

When we talk about fine hair, we are referring to the texture of each individual strand. It is smaller in diameter compared to medium or coarse hair which has a thicker diameter. If you’re unsure about what hair type you have, then the easiest way to determine it is to take a single strand in between your fingers. If you can barely feel it, or not feel it at all, then you have a fine hair type.

It is also important to understand that when we refer to fine hair, we are talking about the diameter of a single strand, while thin hair refers to the density of hair (the amount of hair on your head). It’s therefore possible to have fine hair, but lots of it!

How should you care for fine hair?

Fine hair is typically more delicate than medium or coarse hair, and is therefore more prone to damage, especially if it’s been coloured. Fine hair requires care too, but it can easily feel heavy if applying too much or the wrong product. It’s therefore important that you treat it with light care products specifically formulated for this hair type, that do not ‘weigh’ the hair down.

We recommend only using a hair mask on fine hair if the hair has been damaged. Also make sure that the mask is specifically formulated for your hair type, such as the Light & Soft Hair Mask for fine hair.

When caring for fine hair you also need to be more aware about the amount of product you use and how you apply it. You should never apply product too close to the root because you can risk product build up on the root area. This part of the hair is typically healthier so it requires less care. Over-caring for the root area can weigh the hair strands down, making the whole hair feel heavy. It’s also best to use product in small quantities. If you do experience any product build up on the scalp or root area, then try adding a scalp scrub into your routine every now and then for some gentle exfoliation.

Which natural products should you use on fine hair?

weDo/'s Light & Soft No Plastic Shampoo is a shampoo bar ideal for fine hair that gently cleanses and rinses out easily, leaving the hair soft to touch without weighing it down. Being in the form of a bar not only makes the product good for the environment, but also makes it easier to travel with. The Light & Soft No Plastic Shampoo is also enriched with organic olive oil and green clay providing softening, strengthening and purifying properties for the hair.

The Light & Soft range is specially designed to care for fine hair and also includes weDo/'s Light & Soft Shampoo, Light & Soft Conditioner and Light & Soft Hair Mask. The line is designed to gently moisturise the hair without weighing it down, leaving it feeling soft and silky.

If you are looking for a leave-in product for fine hair, try our Detangle Spray. It won’t be too heavy on the hair, but adds light care and manageability while fighting static and taming frizz. With fine hair it’s a good idea to avoid using very rich leave-in products such as oils and heavy styling products. This is likely to weigh down your locks and may cause your hair to become greasy more quickly.

How often should you wash fine hair?

How often you should wash your hair really comes down to how often it’s needed! With fine hair, you may find yourself needing to wash you locks more frequently, or even daily, as sebum tends to travel down the strand more quickly than coarser hair types, leaving it looking flat and lifeless.

weDo/ Professionals Spread Happiness Hair and Body Mist

weDo/’s sulphate free shampoos and silicone free conditioners are mild and gentle, so it’s perfectly acceptable to wash your hair as frequently as it needs, without the risk of it becoming dry or disrupting the scalp’s natural moisture balance. Alternatively, if you’re short for time in the morning then you can always freshen up your locks with weDo/’s Spread Happiness Hair Mist for some extra hydration.

How can you style fine hair?

If you have fine hair, then chances are you’re looking to add a bit of extra volume to liven up your locks. To do this, you can either blow-dry the hair using a round head brush, use heated styling tools on dry hair, or if you’re trying cut down on using heat, you could opt for using a classic velcro roller on slightly damp hair and let it dry naturally. Whatever the method, the aim is to increase volume at the root.

Lifting at the root can also help to keep the hair cleaner for longer, as the sebum does not travel as quickly down the strand to the mid-lengths of the hair.

Since fine hair is more delicate than most other hair types, it’s important to be gentle with it when styling. Try to avoid brushing rigorously as this can cause breakage, and leave it to try naturally wherever possible. It’s also important to never use straightening irons or curlers on damp hair, as this can cause damage and moisture loss. So, make sure your hair is completely dry before curling or straightening!
