Environmental calendar dates such as Earth Day and World Oceans Day are becoming more recognisable across the globe, as more and more people become more eco-conscious. With this comes a shift in lifestyle choices, ethical buying habits and changes in diet, including many choosing to become vegetarian and vegan.
World Vegan Day is an annual event celebrated by people around the world to raise awareness about veganism, highlight the importance of veganism for our planet, and celebrate how far we have come as a society since the vegan movement began. Continue reading to learn all about World Vegan Day and why it’s an important day to recognise.
World Vegan Day is celebrated on 1st November and marks the start of World Vegan Month that runs throughout November. The purpose of the movement is to bring people together and motivate them to follow a vegan-based lifestyle, which in return is beneficial to the environment and animals. It is also the perfect opportunity to reflect on how far we have come in recent years, with a record breaking 500,000 people taking part in ‘Veganuary’ in 2020, up by 100,00 on the previous year1.
The day marks the founding of The Vegan Society, a trusted foundation which created the Vegan Trademark found on over 55,000 products worldwide2. The Vegan Trademark has been helping consumers to identify products that are free from animal derived ingredients since 1990. The logo is visible on beauty & hair care products, clothing, food & drink, and much more, and is recognised around the world.
Veganism is defined by the Vegan Society as “a way of living which seeks to exclude – as far as is possible and practicable – all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals”3. In dietary terms, being vegan means that a person does not consume any food or drink derived from animals. This not only includes meat from animals, but also dairy products, eggs, honey, and gelatine, an ingredient often found in sweets and desserts.
Vegan hair and beauty products follow the same rules and are products that don’t contain any ingredients derived by animals, such as keratin, silk, honey and lanolin which are often used in cosmetics. The term vegan beauty is often confused with cruelty-free beauty; however the two terms do in fact have their differences. To find more about the difference between the two, check out our article on cruelty-free beauty.
World Vegan Month is a great opportunity to switch your beauty and care products and go vegan. Check out weDo/’s range of No Plastic Shampoo Bars – they’re not only vegan and cruelty-free, but also low waste and packaged in recycled cardboard. Even a little change can make a difference, and the switch from a liquid shampoo is simple and easy! Discover our guide to shampoo bars to learn all about how to use them.
While there isn’t a specific location or event set up to mark World Vegan Day, activities and fundraisers are arranged by individuals and organisations all around the world. There are plenty of ways you can get involved too, and even the smallest of acts can make a difference.
Get involved by going vegan for the day or challenge yourself to follow a vegan lifestyle for the whole month of November. If you already follow a vegan lifestyle, try hosting a vegan dinner party for your friends and show them how delicious vegan dishes can be.
