weDo/ believes that by acting together we can make a difference, so this Earth Day we’ve taken the opportunity to bring you 6 simple, eco-friendly pledges that everyone can easily adopt and switch out as the go about their daily routine.
We believe that Earth Day is the perfect day to make some small changes, which will make a big difference to the environment in the grand scheme of things.
What is Earth Day?
Earth Day marks the modern environmental movement which began in 1970 and is now widely recognised across the world as a day of action to change human behaviour and create global, national and local policy change.
Today, the fight for a better environment continues with increasing urgency as we collectively strive to save our planet. Continue reading to find out what you can do to help make positive change.
How to make a positive impact on Earth Day and beyond
We can all do our bit to make a positive impact on the environment and even the little things can help make a difference in the long run. Here are some simple pledges you can make this April…
1. Reduce plastic consumption
Try to make a conscious effort when it comes to buying single-use plastic. Over 300 million tons of plastic is produced every single year, with 50% of that being made for single-use purposes. More than 8 million tons of that plastic is dumped into our oceans every year1.
Things you can do to reduce your personal plastic consumption include buying reusable shopping bags and water bottles, and buying loose fruit and veg at the supermarket to avoid using any plastic packaging or bags. Personal care and beauty products are also often packaged in single-use plastic, so check out these top tips on how to reduce plastic in the bathroom.
2. Be water conscious
Water wastage is something we’re all guilty of and sometimes it’s difficult to avoid, but following these simple pledges could help reduce it. Turn the tap off when you’re not using it, whether it be while you’re brushing your teeth, washing your hair or doing the washing up – every little helps! Additionally, try to only put a load of laundry on when the washing machine is full. This way you’ll not only be saving water, but energy too.
Taking shorter showers is another effective way to save water day-to-day. Simply put a limit on your shower time by listening to one song only, then when the song ends you know your time is up. This way you’ll save time, water and money on your water bill!
If you’re feeling crafty, then up-cycling is a great way to reuse items or containers that might otherwise be thrown away. Whether it’s creating vases out of empty jam jars or turning an old shirt into a pillow case, you can create new items that look great as well as benefitting the environment. Check out these creative ideas on how to upcycle plastic bottles.
Up-cycling doesn’t have to stop there. Have you ever thought about planting a tree with your used pencil? These plantable zero waste pencils are great for giving back to the environment and make a great gift too!
If you can’t avoid buying items that are packaged up, then keep an eye out for packaging made of alternative materials with a reduced carbon footprint or make sure the packaging is recyclable and made out of recycled materials. Just make sure you have a separate recycling bin alongside your normal bin to make it as easy as possible. This can be one of the easiest yet most effective ways to create a positive impact on the environment.
5. Make your next meal plant-based
Consider implementing a more plant-based diet into your routine and cutting down on eating meat. A study suggests that if everyone were to move to a more plant-based diet, greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by up to 52%2.

6. Reduce your carbon footprint
Get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Could you walk to the shops instead of driving? Maybe you could consider cycling to work instead of taking the bus or tube. Cutting down on means of transport that give off greenhouse gases will do wonders for the environment, plus it’s good for you to get out and exercise.
Another great way to reduce your carbon footprint is by purchasing clothes second hand. Shopping at charity stores or thrift shops is a great way to reduce waste and you can often find some great deals too!
