Vegan hair care products are becoming more and more popular as people decide to follow a vegan lifestyle or just prefer to make more conscious choices. Thanks to this, they are now easier to find, and more accessible than ever. If you want amazing products that are vegan but don’t want to skimp on quality, read our guide on what makes a product vegan, and how to find the best ones for your hair.
Veganism is simply a way of living that tries to exclude all forms of exploitation of cruelty to animals. Most people are familiar with the idea of eating a plant-based diet which means that the food you consume doesn’t contain any animal products. However, veganism goes beyond just the diet and involved looking at all of the products you use, and that includes hair products.
There are two considerations when thinking about vegan hair products. Firstly, they shouldn’t contain any ingredients that are derived from animals. So that means obvious ingredients like honey and beeswax, as well as those that you might not realise come from animals like casein (from cows’ milk), lanolin (from sheep wool) and stearic acid (from pigs’ stomachs).
Secondly, you may also want to use cruelty free products, which mean they are never tested on animals at any point during the supply or manufacturing chain.
You can find a vegan alternative for all types of hair products, including shampoos, conditioners and hair masks. At weDo, we specialise in making only vegan and cruelty-free hair products suitable for all hair types.
There isn’t any reason why vegan shampoo works differently to regular shampoo. For example, ingredients that are vegan can be just as efficient as the non-vegan ones. Vegan shampoo is great for your hair – like weDo’s Moisture & Shine Shampoo which uses 94% natural origin ingredients and is formulated without sulphates, silicones and artificial dyes. It gently cleanses your hair and scalp, leaving it soft, vibrant and moisturised.
If you’re also concerned about the environmental impacts of shampoo packaging, it is reassuring to know that weDo packaging is recyclable, and the bottles are made with post-consumer recycled plastic. If you prefer to minimise packaging, try weDo’s No Plastic Shampoo bar. It’s recyclable and packed in cardboard packaging made from 100% recycled materials, and like all weDo products, it’s vegan!
The main benefit of using vegan hair products is that no animals are harmed in making them. You won’t notice the difference when you switch, but you will feel the benefits of knowing the positive impact of the products you use.
Keratin is an ingredient used to make hair appear full and glossy, but it is not vegan. Keratin usually comes from ground up animal hair, horns, hooves and feathers. In some instances, keratin can be synthesized from amino acids extracted from plants to make vegan keratin. It is always clearly stated on the label if that’s the case. Fortunately, there are many vegan alternatives for keratin, other ingredients that also give hair similar care benefit!
Vegan hair products shouldn’t be difficult to find, if you know what you’re looking for. Familiarise yourself with what ingredients are not classified as vegan – watch out for things like keratin as well as milk, beeswax and honey. Check this list of animal-derived ingredients if you’re unsure.
The easiest way to spot if a product is vegan is to check the label for logos of the Vegan Society, which certifies the use of vegan ingredients and Cruelty Free International, which ensures the way the ingredients are treated and tested involves no animal cruelty. If these logos are present, then you definitely know that what you’re buying is approved vegan.
